The soft sand and ocean breeze make our local beaches perfect for gentle exercise. Today we are focusing on low impact beach workouts for seniors, specifically looking at two of our favorite coastal towns, Margate and Ocean City, New Jersey.

Why Choose the Beach for Low Impact Exercise
Exercising on the beach is fantastic for seniors. The sand provides a natural cushion that is gentle on your joints, reducing the impact on your knees and hips. At the same time, walking or moving on uneven sand engages your core and leg muscles, helping to improve your balance and stability. Breathing in the fresh ocean air is also a wonderful way to boost your mood and reduce stress.
Ocean City Beach Fitness
Ocean City is famously known as a great family resort, but it is also a fantastic place for senior fitness.
If you prefer guided workouts, Ocean City makes it incredibly easy. During the summer, the city offers free beach exercise classes at the 6th Street Beach. On Friday mornings at 8 am, they specifically host a low impact fitness class right on the sand. You just need to bring a towel, some water, and a friend. It is a great way to stay active while socializing with other locals and visitors.
If you want to exercise on your own, the Ocean City Boardwalk is perfect for a brisk morning walk. If you prefer the sand, try walking near the water edge where the sand is firmly packed. This gives you a great cardiovascular workout without putting too much strain on your joints.
Margate Beach Fitness
Margate offers a quieter but equally wonderful environment for senior fitness.
One of the best resources for seniors in Margate is the Martin Bloom Pavilion. Located right on the beach behind the Margate Library, this community center is dedicated to keeping the senior population active and social. They offer indoor classes like chair yoga and tai chi which are perfect if the summer sun gets too hot.
For your own beach workout in Margate, try doing some gentle water aerobics. The water here is often calm in the early mornings. Walking in thigh deep water provides excellent resistance for your leg muscles while the buoyancy of the ocean takes the pressure off your joints. You can also bring a resistance band to the beach. Sit in your beach chair and do some gentle arm pulls and leg extensions while watching the waves.
Safety Tips for Beach Workouts
First, always check with your doctor before starting any new exercise routine.
Second, stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your workout.
Third, protect yourself from the sun. Wear a hat, sunglasses, and plenty of sunscreen. Aim to exercise early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the peak heat.
Fourth, wear supportive shoes. While barefoot walking is nice, wearing a good pair of supportive sneakers can help protect your ankles on the uneven sand.
